Suicide bomber kills at least 39 people in Mogadishu

 

Somalia- A Somali official has confirmed that a car bomb blast at a marketplace in Mogadishu has killed at least 39 people and injured 50 others on Sunday 19.

According to  Reuters, the mayor of Wadajir district, Ahmed Abdulle Afrax, said that the  car was driven by a suicide bomber leading to the fatal incident.

He also commented via yahoo news saying, the car that was parked near a restaurant went off at a busy time when shoppers and traders were gathered inside the market.

Yahoo news added , “women sobbed and screamed outside the market as rescue workers transported bloodied bodies and wounded victims into awaiting ambulance vehicles”.

The Director of the Aamin Ambulance Service, Dr Abdikadir Abdirahman, told Reuters,”We carried 39 dead bodies and there were many others injured.”

The Manager ,Dr Mohamed Yusuf added that the Madina hospital took in 47 injured people.

A butcher Mohamed Haji,  who suffered  from wounds, pointed at a shop that was destroyed by the blast.

He said “Someone had parked the car here and left before it exploded ,”  Pieces of wood and metal sheets on the ground were all that remained of the shop.

A Witness, Abdulle Omar said the market was destroyed , “I was staying in my shop when a car came in into the market and exploded. I saw more than 20 people lying on the ground. Most of them were dead,” he said.

According to Reuters, Al Shabaab, the Islamist insurgent group , did not immediately claim responsibility.

This comes days after Somalia elected a new president , Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, a dual U.S.-Somali citizen and former prime minister.
